Bavaro lies on the Dominican Republicís small east coast and, along with Punta Cana, forms a line of beautiful white sand, palm-lined beaches. The Dominican Republic lies in the middle of the Caribbean region and makes up the eastern two thirds of Hispaniola island, which it shares with Haiti to the west. Bavaro lies around 100 miles to the east of the republicís capital Santo Domingo.

Bavaro climate is essentially tropical and sees hot and humid weather all through the year. Temperatures vary little across the year and the year; monthly averages vary from 75F to 82F. The year is split into two distinct seasons; wet and dry.

The dry season runs from December to April and is the most popular time to visit. The start of this season arguably sees the best weather as itís not only dry but itís also the coolest time of year. Average temperatures are at their lowest of 75F in January and February, with highs of 81fC and lows of 72F. It is rare for temperatures to drop below 68F even at night time.

Although daytime temperatures can rise into the mid-90s, the hottest days are relieved by the cooling trade winds that visit the island. The Ďalizeí is a well known trade wind in the Caribbean that blows steady and mild from the northeast, mainly between November and February. Located the islandís east coast, Bavaro is in a perfect location to benefit from the alize.

As the dry season progresses the heat does start to build up before the rains break around May time. Daily highs can be creeping up into the 90s by the end of the dry season.

The wet Season runs from May to November. As well as being wet, it is also very hot and humid at this time of year so conditions can become a little uncomfortable. May to September sees the most rainfall of the wettest season before it begins to tail off in October and November.

The wettest month on average is September with 7.25" of rainfall. The preceding wet months see about 6.25"-6.75", while it drops to 5.90" in October and 4.75" in November the final month of the rainy season.

Temperatures during the wet season are the highest of the year; August to October sees average temperature at 82F, with highs above 86F and low not dropping below the upper 70's. The high humidity at this time of year makes it feel a little uncomfortable.

There is still a good amount of sunshine during the wet season as most of the rain falls in heavy tropical downpours that donít last for long. A lot of the rain falls in the evening too, leaving good beach weather during the day.

A major feature of Bavaroís weather is that it lies in the Caribbean hurricane belt. The official hurricane season lasts from June to November, but in the Dominican Republic August and September are the most likely months. On average the island is only hit by a hurricane once every 5 years, and a direct hit on is even less common, happening about once every 20 years on average.

The last major hurricane to hit the region was in Hurricane George in 1998. At category three when it made land, the severe weather cost hundreds of lives and thousands of homes. Flooding and landslides were widespread.

Although strong storms are a feature of the wet season, the majority do little harm. The region is well prepared in the event of a hurricane threat and most hotels are now hurricane proof.

Many, in fact, choose the wet season to visit in order to take advantage of fewer crowds and cheaper prices. If you are willing to risk a few downpours, itís not a bad idea.
