Rains to continue

DR1 - The frontal system affecting the country will continue to bring rain, thunderstorms and wind throughout the day, according to Weather Department (Onamet).
Most rain is forecast to fall in the north coast, the Cibao valley, and the border and northeastern regions.
Alerts have been increased for the provinces of Santiago de los Caballeros, Santiago Rodriguez, Puerto Plata, Duarte (San Francisco de Macoris, especially the lower Yuna river basin), Maria Trinidad Sanchez (Nagua) and La Vega. Alerts are still in place in Montecristi, Hermanas Mirabal (Salcedo), Espaillat (Moca), Dajabon, Valverde (Mao) and Monsenor Nouel (Bonao).

Barahona court sets record bail for alleged lobster poacher

Barahona, Dom. Rep. – The Instruction Barahona Court on Thursday set a record bail of RD$500,000 against José Carlos Cuello, charged with trafficking 700 pounds of lobster, violating the season ban.
Environment Defense Prosecutor Andrés Chalas has requested the unprecedented bond for Cuello, who’ll also have to appear before Barahona Judge Bolivar D’Oleo on the 30th of every month.
The ruling came after the prosecution accused Cuello of violating provisions of the Fisheries Law when he poached lobsters during the mating season, in addition to conch.

The UN nixes Xstrata Nickel’s Dominican Republic mine project

Santo Domingo- The United Nations Program for Development (UNDP) on Thursday rejected the planned mine at Loma Miranda (central) by the Canadian company Xstrata Nickel Falcondo.
“The deficiency in the environmental impact study concludes that the project doesn’t meet the country’s environmental and social requirements,“ said UNDP local representative Velerie Julliand.
The UNDP report says the impact study submitted by mining company regarding water pollution and the harm to Loma Miranda as a water source is “superficial and insufficient. “
The United Nations agency’s decision comes four months after the Dominican government requested its assessment on the environmental feasibility of exploiting Loma Miranda’s nickel ore.
“In the topics of hydrology, biodiversity, social and economic aspects the study is general and incomplete with a deficient analysis of the baseline result in the identification and assessment of potential impacts that mining would cause. “

Dominican Republic: Latin American leader in Asia trade

Miami-The Dominican Republic is among Latin America’s fastest growing trade partners of China and South Korea, according to an analysis by online publication Latinvex based on figures from the International Monetary Fund and the Korean government.
Dominican Republic exports to China last year grew 40. 8 percent to $411 million. That was the fifth-highest increase in Latin America. Total trade increased 14. 4 percent to $1. 4 billion dollars, which was the seventh-highest increase in the region.
Meanwhile, the Dominican Republic posted Latin America’s second-highest growth in trade with South Korea. Last year trade grew 16. 5 percent to $ 290 million. Only Costa Rica had higher growth. The Dominican Republic is also among the four countries that had the highest increase in their purchases of Korean products. Last year, Korean exports to the Dominican Republic increased 9. 3 percent to $ 167 million.
Total trade between China and Latin America increased 8 percent to $255. 5 billion last year. Meanwhile, trade between Korea and Latin America fell 6. 3 percent last year to $56. 5 billion. Brazil and Mexico are the main Latin American partners for both China and Korea.
The Dominican Republic is China’s second largest trading partner within the CAFTA trade block and Korea’s third-largest partner within the same group, according Latinvex.

Catholic Church to mediate in opposition party crisis

Santo Domingo. – Former President Hipolito Mejia said Friday that mediation has been requested to the Catholic Church for the continuation of the talks between him and the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) president Miguel Vargas. “We are waiting for a meeting of Miguel Vargas with the Catholic Church, I think it will be today (yesterday) or tomorrow. We ask the Catholic Church to participate as an orchestrator of these things, as a mediator,“ Mejia said. Mejia confirmed he has already met with the church and announced that in the coming days he will send a letter setting out his views on the PRD “timing. “

Legendary baseball scout Epy Guerrero dies at 71

Santo Domingo. – Epy Guerrero, the man largely credited for opening up the path from the Dominican
Republic to Major League Baseball, died Thursday at the age of 71. Epy Guerrero, a baseball scout for the Houston Astros, New York
Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays, opened the first baseball academy in the
country and helped a number of future greats navigate the
path between the Caribbean and their sport’s biggest stage. Guerrero was first hired in 1965 by Pat Gillick, then in charge of
the Astros’ farm system, and followed him to the Yankees and then the
Jays, where Gillick was the general manager from 1978 to 1994.
According to Gillick, Guerrero had a keen eye for talent and was a very loyal employee, a hard worker. Guerrero was inducted into the Dominican Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.
