DR1 - Senator Wilton Guerrero (PLD-San Cristobal) reported yesterday, Monday 23 April, that alleged drug traffickers who are contributors to Hipolito Mejia`s campaign were plotting against the life of journalist Nuria Piera with the aim of changing the current balance of the election campaign, which he says broadly favors PLD candidate Danilo Medina. According to the report, the ringleaders are a Mexican and a Colombian, together with local accomplices who, at the present time, he did not identify, although he did say he had reliable information on the case.
He told Diario Libre that he was going to meet with the chiefs of the National Investigations Department (DNI), the National Police and the National Drug Control Department (DNCD) to provide details of the plot that he considers to be very serious.
Journalist Nuria Piera confessed last night that she is concerned for her own safety and that of her family, after Senator Guerrero`s report of a plot afoot to kill her. "I feel threatened and unprotected," she said. Piera was speaking during a solidarity event organized by the Dominican College of Journalists (CDP) at their headquarters yesterday.
Nuria Piera is best known for exposing and denouncing government corruption. She recently presented alleged evidence of irregular transactions involving PLD senator and party secretary Felix Bautista.
