Santo Domingo- The freight and passenger train to link Santo Domingo with the country’s North region would include the construction of free zone industrial parks at various points, whose products would be taken to East Haina Port, from where riders can transfer to a subway line.
Transport Reform (Opret) director Diandino Peña said the train will also give thousands of people in the cities Santiago, La Vega and Bonao the opportunity to commute to the capital to work, study or other tasks daily.
He said inversely residents of the National District could easily visit those places, with a ride as short as 40 minutes.
Peña said of the US$1. 8 billion he said would cost to build the train, US$1. 0 will be from the private sector and US$800. 0 million from the Government. “What’s advantageous about this train is that we’ve traced it as the key center of gravity for the Dominican economy’s productivity and development. ”
Interviewed in the program “El Sol de la Mañana,” the official added that the train, whose construction would last around five years, will have stops in Los Alcarrizos, Villa Altagracia, Bonao, La Vega and Santiago.
