Campaign to move refuse dump continues
Story Text & Photos © 2012 by DR1 Apr 25 2012 07:59AM
DR1 - Classes are still suspended, indefinitely, at the Jose Reyes School in protest at the establishment of a garbage depot just 100 meters from the school. Yesterday morning, students, teachers and parents and friends held a vigil with facemasks outside the dump in Los Alcarrizos where the city accumulates garbage before transferring it to the Duquesa Landfill. The parents, according to El Caribe, said that would not allow their children to return to school at Los Cerros del Norte until the authorities move the refuse depot. The mayor of Los Alcarrizos told El Caribe in a phone conversation that he would like to have the garbage in another place but that if it (the refuse) were not there, "it would be on every corner of Los Alcarrizos. " However, the mayor had promised reporters from the newspaper last September that he would move the site, but so far this has not happened. Read original at DR1.
