SJM bishop calls for Cibao-Sur highway
Story Text & Photos © 2012 by DR1 Feb 28 2012 20:59PM
DR1 - The bishop of San Juan de la Maguana, Jose Dolores Grullon, has issued a call for the much-debated Cibao-Sur Highway to be built from Constanza to Padre de las Casas. In an article in Hoy newspaper, he argued that the proposed route would be 57 kilometers shorter and save about RD$50 million in construction costs. In addition, the prelate said that such a route would benefit three of the main development areas in the southwest: Azua, San Juan and Barahona. The route from Constanza would connect the southern region with the Cibao valley cities of La Vega, Santiago, Bonao and San Francisco de Macoris. The bishop gave eight reasons for asking the President to reconsider the plans for the project. Regarding the RD$50 million in savings, Monsignor Grullon said that the bridge over the mighty and dangerous Rio Grande would be inaugurated in April, thanks to the Foundation for the Development of Azua, San Juan and Elias Pina and other NGOs. On 12 February Public Works Minister Victor Diaz Rua announced that the government would start construction work on a new land link from Juan Adrian in Monsenor Nouel province to Rancho Arriba, passing by Sabana Larga on to San Jose de Ocoa and the Carretera Sanchez that leads to the southwest. The road would be built with the same mountain technology used to repair the Constanza highway. The Constanza work was carried out by the Brazilian firm, Odebrecht. Read original at DR1.

El AMET y yo
Story Text & Photos © 2013 by Listin Diario May 23 2013 19:00PM
. . Read original at Listin Diario.

Justice Minister clarifies statement on Haitian children
Story Text & Photos © 2013 by Dominican Today May 23 2013 16:59PM
Dominican Today - Santo Domingo-  Justice minister Francisco Domínguez on Tuesday clarified that children of undocumented  Haitian parents aren’t Dominicans, just hours after Senate president Reinaldo Pared questioned his confusing statement, fueling  the row on the Central Electoral Board’s refusal to document the foreigners who claimed citizenship. “The Constitution is very clear, it says who is Dominican and who is not, consequently, I cannot say that children of Haitian parents living illegally are absolutely Dominicans. Now, if they are documented residents and have other conditions, that’s something else,“ he said. He noted that people who’ve been residing here for several generations should be given the chance to obtain documents to stay in the country. Dominguez said humane solutions for the Haitians here don’t imply a violation of the Constitution. Read original at Dominican Today.

Central Bank RD$20. 0B boost unleashes “interest rate war“
Story Text & Photos © 2013 by Dominican Today May 23 2013 16:59PM
Dominican Today - Santo Domingo- The Central Bank’s RD$20. 0 billion boost for the economy with the release of the banks’ reserve requirements and the early reactions from economic agents reveal that the goal has been met as the days wear on. Banks and S&Ls, retailers, builders, dealers and vehicle importers have declared an “interest rate war“ stoked by the monetary authorities’ strategy of lower rates and longer terms for the jump-start which the economic players and the market need. The reference rate the Monetary Board assigned to the RD$20. 0 billion would spur purchases of appliances, homes, apartments, vehicles and other items, while banks have also widened their offer of loans for SMEs, while the 7. 95% consumer lending rate is 1. 05% lower than the authorities’ guideline. The auto dealers have adopted the trend, led by Santo Domingo Motors’7. 95% fixed rate for one year, available at various banks. Read original at Dominican Today.

The State wants to own plants but can’t even collect the light bill
Story Text & Photos © 2013 by Dominican Today May 23 2013 16:59PM
Dominican Today - Santo Domingo- As the State-owned energy utility (CDEEE) seeks a contractor to build two coal-fired power plants owned by the State, the general manager of the EGE Haina energy group criticized the government’s involvement in the industry, because it “shouldn’t compete in the thermal generation market“ and in his view “discourage the arrival of new investors. “ Tito Sanjurjo said the government should “focus on the investment to cut losses and improve the grid“ and “provide conditions that instill investors’ confidence in new thermal generation. “ Sanjurjo, speaking in a breakfast hosted by the Energy Committee of the American Chamber of Commerce of the Dominican Republic, criticized that while companies make large investments in power generation, the state has yet to solve the problems of distribution and collection, falling into a vicious circle feeding the population’s discontent with the energy service. AES Dominicna Also speaking in the activity was AES Dominicana president Marco De La Rosa, who analyzed and future investment prospects in the electricity sector. Story Text & Photos © 2013 by Dominican Today May 23 2013 16:29PM
Dominican Today - Santo Domingo- Gun business leader Eulalio Peralta on Thursday denied an alleged RD$28. 0 million fraud stemming from an Accounts Chamber audit on weapons the Armed Forces Ministry bought from his company. “Such strange news published by Acento. com and picked up by newspaper Hoy creates suspicion because on November 23, 2010, around three years ago, these weapons were delivered to the satisfaction of the Armed Forces Ministry,“ Peralta told elnacional. com. do. Peralta showed two Armed Forces Ministry documents dated May 22, 2013, one signed by comptroller-general Leonel Muñoz Noboa, and delivered in 2010 by Colonel Héctor Suárez Torres on November 23, which he affirms proves the weapons bought had been delivered. He said the Armed Forces Ministry certified having received 200, Colt M4 Commando assault rifles, clips and ammo. Acento. com first reported the alleged fraud on May 21 in an article titled “Audit detects false Armed Forces weapons purchase of more than RD$28 million“ during the tenure of Lt. Gen.
