DR1 - In a country where 100kg cocaine hauls have become almost routine, the National Drug Control Department (DNCD) and the Preventive Police have announced the seizure of 616 packages of what is believed to be cocaine. This cache, which was divided into 25 plastic bags, was found in a hotel in Boca Chica where Samil David Arredondo Cedeno and Pedro de Pena Rodriguez were arrested. As part of "Operation Volcano" and headed by Major General Rolando Rosado Mateo who was assisted by General Juan G. Brown Perez, the DNCD used aircraft in order to track the drugs into the country. DNCD spokesman Roberto Lebron told Listin Diario reporter Mairobi Herrera that the Tactical Division of Sensitive Investigations and the motorized units of the Preventive Police had tracked the drug traffickers` movements. According to another newspaper, the drugs were picked up some 90 kilometers offshore and brought into the country on fast motor launches. El Nuevo Diario said that Arredondo and Pena Rodriguez were from Higuey and La Romana and that material from a Venezuelan sugar mill, the Central Rio Yaracuy, was used in the packaging of the cocaine. However, Rosado Mateo told reporters that he could not provide more details because of the ongoing investigation. The packages were sent to the National Institute for Forensic Science in order to be tested and weighed. Read original at DR1.
