Los Llanos, “Santuario” de lagunas y humedales

Listin Diario - El municipio, de una superficie 436. 46 kilómetros cuadrados, divididos en cinco secciones y 54 bateyes es el santuario y patriarca. Sus lagunas y humedales, con 35 grandes, medianas y pequeñas reservas de agua, se han convertido en atajos de turistas y motivo de investigación científica en la región Este. Amenazadas a desaparecer por la pesca indiscriminada y una sigilosa tala de árboles, estas fuentes de agua están movilizando a turistas y científicos a conocer y estudiar la zona. Las lagunas constituyen el eje de la riqueza agrícola y el centro de excursiones de turistas nacionales y extranjeros. Son también de gran interés para la investigación científica. Máximo Mercedes, ingeniero en minas y ambientalista de la zona, asegura que estas lagunas son ríos subterráneos, que vienen de Los Haitises, corren en desahogo al Mar Caribe y hacen erupciones en las fallas geológicas de la capa tectónica, dando lugar a los lagos y humedales. The coolest reading came from Santiago Intl A with an overnight low of 72. A few spotty light to moderate rain showers were reported, the last in El Catey Intl at 6PM this evening. Skies were generally partly cloudy. Winds are averaging 9 mph from the SE, with a peak gust to 25 mph seen at 4PM this afternoon at Santiago Intl A. By the Numbers DR cities reported rain 13% of the time, and thunderstorms 0%. Average reported rainfall intensity on a scale of 0 to 100 was 36. Cloud cover totaled 50%. USGS Detects Minor Earthquake in the DR

The Dominican Sun - The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has just reported observing a minor earthquake in the Dominican Republic at 4:02 AST. Preliminary measurements give the quake a magnitude of 2. 5. The quake`s epicenter was located in the Mona Passage at latitude 18. 154N and longitude 67. 365W at a depth of 10. 87 miles.
