Río de Janeiro, la ciudad que reunirá desde hoy y hasta el viernes a unos 180 líderes mundiales, en la Conferencia de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Medio Ambiente y el Desarrollo (Río+20), es la segunda ciudad más poblada de Brasil y el primer destino turístico del Hemisferio Sur. El símbolo que identifica a la ciudad es una estatua de 30 metros: el Cristo Redentor o Cristo de Corcovado. Con sus brazos abiertos, la figura de Jesús de Nazaret ( la estatua Art decó más grande del mundo) se encuentra a unos 709 metros sobre el nivel del mar, en el Parque Nacional de la Tijuca. En 2007 fue elegida una de las Maravillas del Mundo Moderno. Centro económico y cultural del sureste brasileño, las postales turísticas de Río de Janeiro también incluyen el Cerro Pan de Azúcar, las playas de Copacabana e Ipanema, la isla de Paquetá, el estadio Maracanã y la Quinta da Boa Vista. The Dominican Sun - Across the Dominican Republic in the last 24 hours the highest observed temperature by DRSol was 91 at Puerto Plata In. The coolest reading came from Santiago Intl A with an overnight low of 72. A few spotty light to moderate rain showers were reported, the last in El Catey Intl at 6PM last night. Skies were generally partly cloudy. Winds are averaging 9 mph from the SE, with a peak gust to 25 mph seen at 4PM yesterday afternoon at Santiago Intl A. By the Numbers DR cities reported rain 11% of the time, and thunderstorms 0%. Average reported rainfall intensity on a scale of 0 to 100 was 38. Cloud cover totaled 49%. USGS Detects Minor Earthquake in the DR

The Dominican Sun - The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has just reported observing a minor earthquake in the Dominican Republic at 4:02 AST. Preliminary measurements give the quake a magnitude of 2. 5. The quake`s epicenter was located in the Mona Passage at latitude 18. 154N and longitude 67. 365W at a depth of 10. 87 miles.
