Dominican Today -
Santo Domingo.– A Dominican subsidiary of Royal
Dutch Shell PLC has sold its 137 gas stations across the Dominican Republic to a Barbados-based fuel supplier. Friday`s statement from
Shell does not reveal the cost of its deal with the Sol Group, which
was formed in 2005 through the purchase of Shell`s petroleum
distribution and marketing businesses in several Caribbean nations. It will allow the Sol Group to continue using the Shell brand under a licensing agreement. Last
year, the Dominican Republic paid $110 million for Shell`s stake in the

Water for Haiti campaign continues

Sosua News -
Last week José Luis and Gerhard Mulder of the SOMONCA foundation and `Tractor del Norte` returned to Port-au-Prince to check on the progress of the water project.
In addition to a batch of medicines, they also took 22 tents that were purchased with funds collected from the residents by Lynne Pennickton (from Mulata 2).
However, the Haitian people need many more tents, because there are now at least 10,000 families with practically zero protection from the sun and rain.
The camp is around 5km from the capital, and is growing by the hour, as people get to know that fresh drinking water is being delivered every day.
We`ve named the area `Campo Sosúa`.
This was suggested by the Haitians themselves, because they are so grateful for the help that they`ve received from Sosúa and Wassenaar.
In the meantime, Elias and Josef (who are responsible for the daily water delivery) have discovered another camp, around 10 km from the capital, where around 8,000 families are living without any aid at all.
Yes, without drinking water and food.
Elias and Josef also left water containers at this camp, and are now also providing drinking water to this second camp - now named `Campo Wassenaar`.

First major Dominican bank swindler taken to jail screaming

Dominican Today -
Santo Domingo.- officials carried out around 1 p.m. Monday the arrest warrant against Leonel Almonte, who was transferred from the capital’s famous Otorrino Clinic to the office of sentencing judge Saulo Isabel Diaz.
Almonte, the first to fraudulently fail a major Dominican bank, denounced that the agents ripped out the IV serum prescribed by his doctors, prior to being escorted out of the medical center.
The two police agents and an Assistant prosecutor executed the warrant, while Almonte resisted, yelling “they removed the serum, they are taking me away by force.”
Almonte was transferred to the Ciudad Nueva Courthouse to Diaz’s chambers, who had previously pledged to send the convict to serve his sentence in the jail at Najayo. He went to the clinic claiming he had a depressive crisis as soon as he learned of the warrant.
Diaz had stated that the ex banker had to go to prison regardless of his health status.
Almonte, who was president the Universal Financial Group, was sentenced to 15 years in prison for swindling three depositors who pressed charges – of the thousands of the bank Universal - out of more than 80 million dollars.

Demanding higher profit, gas station to halt sales for 6 hours Wednesday
Story Text & Photos © 2010 by Dominican Today Feb 8 2010 11:29AM

Dominican Today -
Santo Domingo.- Fuel retailers will halt sales in their stations the country for six hours on Wednesday around the country, to demand that the Government raise their profit margins.
In a statement the National Fuel Retailers Association announced the measure Monday morning, noting that its 456 affiliate stations nationwide won’t pump fuel from 6 a.m. to 12 noon. “To continue operating fuel stations with high fuel costs and the increase in the different economic variables is currently untenable.”
Among those variables retailers cite a pay raise for employees, social security payments, 11 percent accumulated inflation in the last two years, losses from evaporation and temperature and sagging average sales, from 79,000 to 40,000 gallons per station, resulting from consumers changing to propane gas and high taxes on gasoline.
The fuel retailers say what most affects them is the proliferation of smuggled diesel, which pays not tax and is sold through third parties and people not related to the sector.

Dominican Today -
Santo Domingo.- 2009 was a very good year for the Social Security Treasury (TSS), as the number of Family Health Insurance affiliates increased and revenue jumped around 16 percent.
TSS funds reached in RD$38.8 billion (around US$1.0 billion) last year, with an increase in the number of contributors of the Dominican Social Security System, and which according to a report topped the 2008 revenue of RD$33.5 billion.
“The Treasury posted record figures. Dominican workers and employers gave their support as an example and confidence in the Social Security System, which reflects a considerable increase in affiliates as well as in contributions,” the entity said in a statement.
As to the amount of members, the Family Health Insurance’s beneficiary affiliates in the Contributing Regime rose 19 percent last year, which allowed more than two million citizens to access basic health services through their Health Risk Administrators.
Affiliate revenue increased 24.2 percent whereas collections in the Labor Risks Insurance climbed to 6.30 percent, and Insurance for the Aged, Handicapped and Survival reached 18.27 percent more than in 2008.
In its annual report the TSS said most of the workers (59 percent) registered have a average wage of 10,000 pesos.
“To reach these accomplishments the TSS maintained efficiency levels in revenue management and also provided facilities for employers by means of an extension of the window of payments,” it said.
